No matter how long the slinky is, the bottom of the slinky will stay still (hover) until the top reaches it. Even if the slinky is over 1000 feet long.
I spent an ungodly long time thinking about the physics of this because I’m really stupid at physics, and the only conclusion I can come to is that the spring force is equal to the gravitational force, so it stays in place until it contracts and then it’s just a matter of momentum? but that would be treating the top of the slinky as a separate object from the bottom of a slinky and OH GOD I DON’T KNOW I HATE PHYSICS GO AWAY

still blows my mind!
